Home at Last! (Again)

IMG_1060

I was so beyond elated to be back home on Monday night after spending 90 of the last 130 days in the hospital!  I couldn’t have made it through without the unrelenting support of my family and friends!  Special thanks to Todd, my mom and dad for driving up to City of Hope EVERY day to visit me, play games, watch movies and just fart around.  I know that was a huge sacrifice on their part and I am so grateful.  Mychaela made it after work several times and I saw Rex a few times between his SAE gigs and related sicknesses.  Today is the 41st since my transplant ~ almost half way to the magic day 100 🙂  For the next 2 months, I will visit my new doc at COH for blood analysis and a check up for Graft vs. Host Disease, along with many other dangerous developments that I am very susceptible to at this time.  Dr. F is so amazing!  He’s a Trojan!  He’s the department head, and the perfect combination of brilliance and fun 🙂  This morning’s visit went quite well.  After seeing my blood counts, Dr. F had to double check he was looking at the correct chart!  My whites, reds and platelets are flying!  I am really hoping for no more transfusions!  Early tomorrow I will be back up there for my 4th bone marrow biopsy (ouchie) to make sure everything looks good in there.  I will go to once a week after a couple of months, then down to once a month, and so on, with 3 more bone marrow biopsies along the way (ouchie, ouchie, ouchie).  At the 100 day mark, Dr. F will determine how much more I can do in public.  As of now, I cannot go to any public place, no visitors, no plants in the house, very restricted diet, redonculus hand washing, tons of hydration, etc.  Todd has completely transformed our house into a sterile clean room sitch.

My Donor, My Hero, My Lifesaver:  Leason Pomeroy, IV Update:DSC_1482_2

Leason has recovered beautifully from his procedure which snagged 1 quart of his bone marrow from a series of drill holes in the hips.  Ya!  His follow-up doc appointments have confirmed that his blood counts are where they should be, and his drill holes have healed.  The only concern (and it’s kinda a biggie) is that he has developed a rather large crack down the center of his buttock area.

Top 10 Reasons it’s Better at Home

10.  No middle of night wake-ups for blood tests, infusions, vitals, etc.

9.  Hospital food BLOWS.

8.  Hospital bathroom has no heat, and I was there for December and part of Jan. (Ostrich skin to the max.)

7.   No docs coming in at 6am to start prodding.

6.  No more documenting everything that goes in and everything that comes out.

5.  No need for band aids on my elbows due to the sand paper quality of hospital sheets.

4.  Toilet – no details, just trust me.

3.  I’m no longer hooked up to my IV tree 24/7.  When they constantly pump you with hydration, you have to get up and pee every half hour, unplugging and rolling your tree into the sub-zero bathroom with you.

2.  Having a bubble room directly across from the nurses’ station, sleeping is virtually impossible.  The night shift is an insanely loud gossip group.  I will never care that Teresa got sh*t faced, slept with Diego, and now has to figure out how to tell Isabelle.

1.  No more randoms busting into my bubble to talk solely about my poop – SO f-ing annoying!

Trying to keep up the cool factor while in captivity:

I am a survivor of two extremely rare diseases, thanks to over 100 blood transfusions and ultimately, a bone marrow transplant. My blog, joselynsbrawl.com, chronicles my adventures through medical offices, operating rooms, clinics, transfusion centers, hospital transplant floors, victory celebrations, and finally my bucket list items – all with a humorous and sometimes profane twist. My goal is to inspire others not to give up on life or anything else, and to understand that it’s actually possible to enjoy any experience, even battling a life-threatening illness (or two).

  16. What a great picture of you mask and all. Its good to see you on your feet again and enjoying being outside for a change. We are sooooo happy for you and for Todd. What a relief to know your counts are shooting the moon and you are closing in on the 100 days. I’m glad Leason only suffered a mild crack in the butt – could have been worse. The good thing about having his marrow is that your tollerance for alcohol consumption has now doubled! Love you, Lynn and Carolee

So very glad to hear you’ve left the bubble behind and that your recovery is going in the right direction. Although a shame about Leason’s crack problem. I think you have stumbled on an idea for a new reality TV show “Night Nurse Station”. Just imagine the drama. Even with all the procedures and meds, your fabulous sense of humor and wit are sharp as ever. Keep getting well and countdown to St. Patty’s!! xo, The Singers
